We’re hoping everyone’s surviving this abnormally long winter in decent spirits! With the eager anticipation of Spring around the corner, we’re here today to talk about one of our favourite things to capture: the engagement shoot!

For us, an engagement shoot is the introduction or the ‘hello, let’s get to know each other’ between the couple and the photographer. It’s really the first opportunity the couple gets to see how their photographer works and how well they all vibe together.

The importance of an engagement shoot is actually a lot less on the photos and more on how comfortable the couple feels when being photographed. We can’t stress enough how important this is. If the couple is uncomfortable with their photographer, then it’s almost guaranteed  the photos will not be the greatest. These details come through in the final product.

A lot of our packages at Velour include an engagement shoot, so it gives us a chance to get to know you before your big day. It also helps to get you comfortable with a camera being pointed at you. Camera shyness is real and the best way to get through it is with one of us taking photos of you for 2+ hours.

So do you have an engagement shoot coming up? Here are a few of our top tips to get you prepped before and during the shoot!!

The Preparation

Location

Is there a location that has special meaning to you? It could be where you had your first date, a favourite park or even a cafe you enjoy going to. If you don’t have a location in mind, don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for some suggestions.

Research

It doesn’t hurt to browse Pinterest or check out what other shoots your photographer has done. It might give you ideas into how you want your engagement shoot to be like. Do you like the look of a sunset? Or do you prefer a bright sunny day? These are good things to consider when you plan.

The Shoot Day

Eat

Have a great meal before your shoot! This may sound trivial, but there is nothing worse than going for a 2 hour shoot and all you can think about is food. Engagement shoots usually involve a lot of walking so be prepared to work up an appetite!

Comfort is in style

‘How should we dress??’ That is probably one of the most commonly asked questions we get! Honestly, you can wear whatever you want! It’s your engagement shoot. But if we are going to shoot in a park, we’ll usually suggest comfortable clothes and shoes, like your favourite pair of jeans and a button down shirt. If we are shooting in the city, feel free to wear something a bit more fancy. No matter what, make sure you feel good in whatever you’re wearing.

Sometimes a nice shirt and a pair of jeans is all you need.

You can never be overdressed either.

Have fun!

This is the biggest one. Natural moments are the best moments! Pretend the camera isn’t even there and you are just having a nice date. I find the best photos to be natural moments shared between the couple. You two just have fun and it’s our job to capture those moments. Of course there will always be some direction given, but really a lot of the smiles and interaction you see in our photos are natural moments between the couples.

Well that’s about it for our tips! We hope we were able to offer you a bit of an inside look at the engagement shoot from the photographer’s perspective. Oh, and if you want to ask us more, shoot us a message!

To recap:

  1. eat

  2. be comfortable

  3. have fun

Here’s hoping spring comes quickly!!
